This improved dirt and gravel road is well maintained throughout the summer season. Tarryall Creek is the main drainage to the east of the pass. Visitors will see Mt. Silverheels to the south. The top of Boreas Pass follows the same path as the Continental Divide. Individuals interested in railroading history should know that the road follows the route once taken by the narrow gauge Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad which ran until the early 1930's. At the top of Boreas Pass, the ruins of the town of Boreas Station stand, bearing testimony to the rich history of the area. Recently the Forest Service and several other partners have initiated a restoration project which includes Robert's Cabin near the site of the old town of Hamilton and the two-story section house at the top of Boreas. An auto tour brochure describing the history of the area is available at the South Park Ranger District Office in Fairplay. Boreas received its name in honor of the Greek God of the North Wind.
Directions from Fairplay: Travel north 9 miles on Highway 285 from Fairplay, turn left on County Road 50 and drive to the town of Como. Travel through the town of Como, following the signs to Boreas Pass. The Boreas Pass Road begins after crossing the cattle guard. Turn right on Forest Road 33 (Boreas Pass Road). Follow the road over Boreas Pass and down the west side (Forest Road 10) to Highway 9, which leads to the town of Breckenridge.
