General Description

The East Fork Campground, 11 miles east of Pagosa Springs, is about 5 miles west of Treasure Falls and .75 mile off Hwy. 160, on the East Fork Road (Forest Development Road # 667).

Ponderosa pine and Gambel oak provide ample shade on a ridge above the East Fork of the San Juan River. There are a few level pull-throughs. Short but steep trails lead to the river bank.

There is plenty of fishing here and along the East Fork, upstream from the campground. East Fork Road parallels the river for several miles before entering private land.

Trailheads for the Coal Creek Trail and the Quartz Ridge Trail are at Sand Creek, two miles past the campground. Four-wheelers and ATV users will enjoy the upper section of the East Fork Road to Elwood Pass.

Directions from Pagosa Springs, Colorado: Travel north on U.S. Hwy 160 for 9.75 miles, then turn east on Forest Development Road #667 for 0.75 mile.

Report: Beautiful campsites spread out in Ponderosa pines. Pretty quiet. Nice hosts. Some sites look down into river but it's a long way down. Dispersed camping along river if you drive past CG turnin. Fun drive if you have ATV's or 4WD going down East Fork Rd. Hooks into network of roads to Summitville and Platora.
Conditions: At only 7700 ft., was warmer than many of the campgrounds in the area. Almost all in pines. 4WD was very rough but FUN! Go through a couple creeks that can be door level if it's been wet. Saw some ATV's that made it but both were wet and said they got pushed around.
Water Availability: Hand pumps for water. Several around campground.
