General Description

Haviland Lake fishing site is a scenic area located about one mile off U.S. Highway 550. With the Hermosa Cliffs in the background, morning views across the reservoir can be memorable. Fishing can be good and row boating is permissible, although Forebay is a more secluded fishing site than Haviland Lake. There is a good selection of camping sites, some located near the lakeshore and ponderosa pines provide shade.

Directions from Durango,: Travel 18 miles north on U.S. Highway 550 and turn east on Forest Road 671.

Report: Fishing is usually good in the mornings until mid-afternoon. Beware of afternoon thunderstorms. Mostly rainbow, some brook trout.

Graysill Trail - This trail provides a quick and easy way out of Cascade Canyon. The main attraction from this trail is to get to the Rico-Silverton Trail instead of going all the way to the end of Cascade Creek.

Haviland Lake Campground - Haviland Lake Campground has scenic and convenient campsites a mile off of U.S. 550. With the Hermosa Cliffs in the background, morning views across the reservoir are memorable.

Rico-Silverton Trail - This trail ascends two high mountain passes, thus affording excellent views and good opportunities for photography.

Salt Creek Trail - The trail switchbacks down through meadows and aspen glades. The bottom of the trail is a bit rougher and steeper, so watch your step.
