This trail provides good hiking late spring to mid-fall. It follows the stream most of the way up and is shaded by big fir, spruce and aspen trees. The trail gradually climbs the first 2 1/2 miles and then goes up a series of switchbacks before meeting with Missionary Ridge Trail. Fall colors are quite a sight to see and large game animals such as elk and mule deer are not uncommon. An overnight loop trip using Missionary Ridge Trail and First Fork Trail is possible.
Directions from Durango, Colorado: Travel east on County Road 240 for 8.0 miles. This road will turn into Florida Road. Turn north at Colvig Silver Camp. Go past the camp, over the cattle guard and follow the dirt road for about 1 1/2 miles to the end where the trailhead begins. A strong 2WD or 4WD with good clearance is needed for the last part of the dirt road.
