General Description

Kennebec Pass ends at almost 12,000 feet. The last 3 miles are 4 WD only, but the walk to the top is well worth the view.

Directions from Durango, Colorado: Take U.S. Hwy 160 west of Durango for 11 miles to County Road 124 at Hesperus. Turn right (north) here and travel through Mayday, following the La Plata River. This road becomes Forest Road 498 and the last 3 miles are four-wheel drive only.

Report: This is the most beautiful spot in the area to me. For Louis L'Amour fans this is the best Sackett landmark. I hate to reccommend this because I would rather keep it to myself. Be careful when you go to stay on public land. But enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!!
Conditions: Perfect if you like the high-ups
Water Availability: If you are hiking bring lots. I did not see any available except maybe in one of the campgrounds.

Junction Creek Campground - Junction Creek Campground is a good base camp for Durango activities. The campground is on a south-facing hillside a small distance above Junction Creek.

Kroeger Campground - The campground is six miles up the canyon and shaded by a mixture of spruce, fir, aspen, and cottonwood. Expect cool nights during the summer at this elevation of 9,000 feet.
