The Ashcroft Ghost Town Trail is located along Castle Creek in the Elk Mountain Range, about 12 miles south of Highway 82 near Aspen. This easy system of trails includes a handicapped-accessible section. This unique sub-alpine trail is at 9,500' and borders the Maroon-Snowmass Wilderness. Layer your clothing to be ready for cool mornings and evenings and probable hot weather during the day. Be prepared with hat, sunscreen and rain gear. Long pants and hiking/trail shoes recommended. The site is maintained and preserved by the Aspen Historical Society and the National Forest, as a reminder of the area's mining history. A $3 fee for adults (children under 10 free) goes to the Aspen Historical Society for maintenance of the town. Guided tours are available in the summer by calling 925-5756.
