General Description

Ute trail is a difficult but scenic trail located on the south east side of Aspen. The trailhead is located off of Ute Avenue. This .9 mile, steep single-track switchbacks up the mountain to an overlook 700 vertical feet above the town. A little used trail continues up the ridge to the summit of Ajax mountain, another 2,300 vertical feet of gain. Good footwear is strongly recommended as the footing is slippery, particularly when very dry. Be on the lookout for falling rocks from hikers on higher switchbacks as it is all but impossible not to knock them off.
