Report: The toughest part of the trip is the first 3/4 of a mile up the trail from the parking area. Quite a climb but, a good test for the old ticker. The trail has been carved out by man and horse alike over the years. From this point on, the rest of the climb is gradual with plenty of photot ops (rest ops too!). Skinny Fish is a beatiful lake with beautiful vistas in many directions. We were there in mid June, 2003. Nice cool night, lots of waterfalls in the area. The fishing was slow but worth waiting for. Nice size brookies.
Conditions: There was little snow and the areas of burn from the Big Fish Fire of 2002 can play with your emotions a bit as you traverse these areas but the hike is well worth the education...
As far as bugs, we did notice a number of wood ticks, but no mosquitos. There was also a hatch of some sort of flies but they didn't bite - Just intruded every orafice on your face :-)
Water Availability: We took our own water since it was just an overnight trip. Plenty of creeks on the way up to fill your bottles though I wouldn't recommend the lake water if you can help it. Why people insist on throwing their fish entrails back into the lake I'll never understand. It really ruins the next fisherperson's opportunity to enjoy the lakes many fishing access points - It's against the regulations too.
Recommended Clothing: You would want to bring an array of clothing just as you would for any high packing trip (10,000 feet).
