Marvine Trail

The trail leaves the Marvine Trailhead on the left side of the corrals, and crosses East Marvine Creek bridge and then follows the creek upstream 1/2 mile to the Flat Tops Wilderness boundary. From the Wilderness boundary, it is about 1 1/2 miles to Johnson Lake. Just above Johnson Lake, the Wild Cow Park Trail heads north to Big Ridge. The East Marvine Trail crosses numerous small streams as it winds its way to Rainbow Lake 2 miles above Johnson Lake. The cover has changed from aspen intermixed with lodgepole pine to predominantly Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir. Roughly 1 mile above Rainbow Lake the trail leaves Marvine Creek and climbs 2 miles to the Flat Tops plateau. During the climb, the trail crosses several rock slide areas as it follows switchbacks to the top. Once on top, the trail crosses the rolling tundra between Big Marvine Peak to the south and Little Marvine Peak to the north for three miles to the Oyster Lake Trail. A spur of the Marvine Trail switchbacks to the top of Big Marvine Peak. The trail starts about 2 miles north of the Oyster Lake Trail and is delineated by rock cairns and wooden posts. Big Marvine Peak offers a panoramic view of the Flat Tops Wilderness and surrounding area.
Directions from Meeker: East Marvine Trail is located 35 miles east of Meeker. Take State Highway 13 east out of Meeker for one mile; turn right on County Road 8 for 28 miles; turn right, cross the bridge and turn left on the Marvine Creek Road (County Road 12) for 6 miles to the Marvine trailhead parking area.
