The trail starts from the east side of the campground following Hill Creek for 1/2 mile and then fords the creek to the north side. The trial traverses an oak brush covered side hill for another 1/4 mile, and then follows a bench above Hill Creek through aspen groves and grassy parks. The trail has several steep, rocky stretches that are difficult for horse or hiker. Three and one-half miles from the campground, the trail enters the Flat Tops Wilderness deviating from the main Hill Creek drainage and following a minor drainage onto the plateau. Engelmann spruce and alpine-fir become the dominant tree species along the trail as you travel through a long narrow park the remaining 1/2 mile to the Oyster Lake Trail.
Directions from Meeker: Hill Creek Trail is located 29 miles east of Meeker. Take State Highway 13 east out of Meeker for one mile; turn right on County Road 8 for 18 miles to the South Fork Road (County Road 10) Turn right for two miles, then jog left 1/4 mile, then right for 9 miles to the then turn left , one mile to the Hill Creek trailhead.
