The North Elk Trail begins along the Buford-Newcastle Road (Forest Road 245). It provides good access for hunting and fishing and is open to motorcycles and ATVs The trail follows the east fork of North Elk through aspen and oak brush covered hillsides for 2 1/2 miles to the junction of the middle fork and the east fork of North Elk Creek. It then follows the main fork 1 1/2 miles down to the Hamilton cowcamp near the confluence of the main and west fork of North Elk. The last 1 1/2 miles follows an old road through the meadows in the bottom of the creek until it reaches private land.
Directions from Meeker: North Elk Trail is located 32 miles east of Meeker. Take State Highway 13 east out of Meeker for one mile; turn right on County Road 8 for 20 miles to the Buford New Castle Road (County Road 17). Turn right for 11 miles to the North Elk Trail. The trail may be difficult to find; there is not any trailhead information board.
