General Description

This well marked trail follows the South Fork of the Fryingpan River. The trail is fairly easy hiking and stays in trees for the majority of the trip. After 3.5 miles you will come to Deadman Lake. The trail from here gets somewhat harder to follow. To get to South Fork Pass stay on the trail and climb approximately 600 feet in your last mile of travel. From the end of the trail it is possible to continue over to Independence Pass and Hwy. 82 via the Lost Man Lake Trail. Heading down stream takes you to Lost Man Reservoir and upstream takes you past Lost Man Lake, up over a pass and then past Independance Lake to the highway.

Directions from Carbondale: From Carbondale travel east on Hwy. 82 to Basalt. Turn left into downtown Basalt and follow the Fryingpan River Road about 28 miles. Turn right on to road #504 at the Norrie Colony sign. About 3 miles up the road take the left fork. In another mile take the left fork again and follow it to the end of the road to the trailhead.
