The towns and terrain linked by the West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway comprise a plethora of historic, cultural, and recreational activity opportunities for anyone visiting the area. Opportunities for hiking, biking, rock climbing, rafting, canoeing, fishing, etc. exist in and around the region in which this byway travels. The towns linked by the West Elk Loop sustain their economies through farming, ranching, mining, and tourism. Situated along the route are many attractions such as the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Needle Rock, Crystal Mill, and Redstone Castle. For the history lover as well as the nature lover this scenic byway provides access to many activity sites found on Colorado's western slope.

Directions from Interstate 70: Take the Glenwood Springs, Aspen exit on to route 82. Follow Highway 82 to Carbondale. Make a right on to Highway 133 toward McClure Pass and Redstone. This is the beginning of the West Elk Loop.

Seasonal Information:
Normally Open: Year-round (NOTE: McClure Pass may be closed due to snowstorms during the Winter months. Access to Kebler Pass is limited to snowmobiles from November to May.) .
