General Description

The Piney River/Sheephorn Creek General Forest Area is located north of Vail. It includes the Piney River and Sheephorn Creek drainages, Red and White Mountain, and Piney Ridge. Red Sandstone Road and Forest Service Road 701 from Muddy Pass access much of the Piney River drainage. Some of the attractions in the area include Piney Lake, Lost Lake, Red and White Mountain four-wheel drive road, and a portion of the Eagle's Nest Wilderness. The area is relatively unpopulated and undeveloped. There are no developed campgrounds in the area.

Some of the recreational activities in the Piney River/Sheephorn Creek General Forest Area include hiking, backpacking, mountain climbing, dispersed camping, fishing, four-wheel driving, hunting, scenic driving, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

Directions from Vail: To the Piney River drainage, go north on Red Sandstone Road, FDR 700.Access the Sheephorn Creek drainage from County Road 11 and FDR 401, north of Wolcott and State Bridge.

Directions from Beaver Creek: To the Piney River drainage, go north from Vail on Red Sandstone Road, FDR 700.Access the Sheephorn Creek drainage from County Road 11 and FDR 401, north of Wolcott and State Bridge.

Eagles Nest Wilderness-Vail side - The Eagles Nest Wilderness straddles the Gore Range, to the east of Vail. The western portion of the wilderness area lies in the Holy Cross Ranger District and the eastern portion lies in the Dillon Ranger District.

Red & White Mountain Four-Wheel Drive Road - This road begins off Red Sandstone Road, north of Vail. It runs along Red and White Mountain then branches and can access either June Creek, north of Edwards, or Muddy Pass, north of Wolcott.

Red Sandstone/ Lost Lake Road Cross-country Ski Tr - This trail follows Red Sandstone Road north of Vail to Lost Lake Road and eventually to Lost Lake. There are a number of other forks off of Red Sandstone Road.

Red Sandstone/Piney River Ranch Road - Red Sandstone Road provides the main access to a large area north of Vail. The road begins in the town of Vail and is passable in two-wheel drive vehicles.
