The Piney River/Sheephorn Creek General Forest Area is located north of Vail. It includes the Piney River and Sheephorn Creek drainages, Red and White Mountain, and Piney Ridge. Red Sandstone Road and Forest Service Road 701 from Muddy Pass access much of the Piney River drainage. Some of the attractions in the area include Piney Lake, Lost Lake, Red and White Mountain four-wheel drive road, and a portion of the Eagle's Nest Wilderness. The area is relatively unpopulated and undeveloped. There are no developed campgrounds in the area.Some of the recreational activities in the Piney River/Sheephorn Creek General Forest Area include hiking, backpacking, mountain climbing, dispersed camping, fishing, four-wheel driving, hunting, scenic driving, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.
