This trail offers a unique journey through the steep and narrow canyon of East Elk Creek. The trail follows East Elk Creek, furnishing the hiker with miles of cascading waterfalls and white water. The trail has been chiefly used for horse packing, but soil erosion has left parts of the trail extremely narrow and hazardous, which limits trail use to experienced riders only. There are several historical remains of the early gold mining days scattered along the trail. East Elk Creek provides good fishing.
Directions from Rifle: Head east on I-70 for 14 miles. At the New Castle exit turn left into New Castle. Turn right at 7th St. Follow the road for approximately 2 miles and turn right at East Elk Road ( FDR 241) and follow it to the trailhead.
