There is excellent fishing, picturesque canyon walls, and cascading water falls. This area is regarded as one of the best elk calving habitats in Colorado. Travel can be made by horse but lower sections of the trail are very hazardous and extreme cation should be used. The trail travels up the ridge and then through meadows.
Directions from Rifle: Head east on I-70 for 14 miles. At the New Castle exit turn left into New Castle. Turn right at 7th St. Follow the road for approximately 2 miles and turn right at East Elk Road ( FDR 241) and follow it to the trailhead. Follow the East Elk Creek Trail 3.2 miles. At Spring Creek bear to the right beyond the stream.
