TRAIL ENDS: At the Huckleberry Lookout

ATTRACTIONS: The Huckleberry Lookout is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lookouts lived here during the summer months, watching for wildfires, and radioing in the locations when they occurred. The lookout is a two story building, with windows on all four sides of the upper story, and is open to the public. From here you can see southwest to Jackson Lake, Jackson Hole, and the Teton Range. To the north, you can look 2.5 miles down Huckleberry Ridge, into Yellowstone National Park. The views to the east are of the Teton Wilderness: Wildcat Peak, Brown Meadows, and beyond to the Buffalo Plateau and the Absarokas. The trail to the lookout winds through a large portion of the 1988 Huckleberry Fire and provides an opportunity to view the effects of the fire and the regrowth of plants and trees. Fireweed blooms in August, covering the slopes in purple. August is also the time to pick the huckleberries for which the mountain is named. Be alert for bears who may be sharing the huckleberry patches with you. Make noise while hiking so you do not meet a bear unexpectedly.

Directions from Moran Jct.: Travel north on Hwy. 89/287 for 27 miles to the Sheffield Creek Trailhead, across from Flagg Ranch. From Sheffield Creek Trailhead, follow the trail up until you can see the lookout clearly to the west of the trail, up on the ridge. Leave the main trail here and walk up to the ridge, where you will find a trail leading up to the lookout.
