TRAIL BEGINS: Box Creek Trailhead TRAIL ENDS: Gravel Ridge, looking north into the area affected by the Teton Tornado. If you continue on and make a loop, returning on the Clear Creek Trail, you will end at the Clear Creek Trailhead, approximately 1.5 miles from where you began at Box Creek. ATTRACTIONS: The main attraction of this trail is that it accesses the site of the Teton Tornado. The Teton Tornado of 1987 was the highest altitude tornado ever recorded. It cleared and area 20 miles long and 3 miles wide in places, breaking off trees and completely uprooting others. From Gravel ridge, you can see into the affected area. If you continue on, making the loop out Clear Creek Trail, you will hike 4-5 miles through the blowdown. It took crews five years to finally reopen all the trails using only primitive tools like crosscut saws and axes. The evidence of their work and that of the tornado stacked around you as you hike is dramatic.
Directions from Moran Jct.: Follow U.S. Highway 26/287 east about 3.5 miles to the Buffalo Valley Road. Turn left and go about 9 miles to the Box Creek trailhead access road on the left. Go about .5 mile to the Box Creek Trailhead parking area.
