General Description

The Box Elder Canyon Trail is a 5.5 mile hike or horseback ride. It can be accessed by two wheel drive vehicles. The trail begins at the end of the road and heads up Abbots Fork. The Box Elder Canyon Trail heads to the north side of Box Elder Pass, but past Mud Spring the trail is difficult to follow. This trail has been maintained as a primitive trail.

Dogs and horses are allowed in the Stansbury Mountain Range. Please keep your dog leashed at all times at all developed areas and parking lots.

Directions from Salt Lake City: Access #1: Head west on I-80 and take the Stansbury-Tooele exit. Follow the signs to Grantsville. In Grantsville turn south on Cooley Street and go about 6 miles to Box Elder Canyon Road, about 1 mile south of South Willow Canyon turnoff. Turn southwest onto dirt road and continue about 5 miles to the end of the road. Access #2: Via Mack Canyon - Big Hollow Trail from the north or south. From the north from South Willow Canyon; from the south from East Hickman Canyon.

Report: Unfortunately we couldn't make it to the trailhead in our Subaru... the road is very rough and damaged. High-clearance 4WD for this one!
