General Description

The Mt. Elwell Trail (12E22) is a moderately difficult 4.8 hike at an elevation of 6,700 feet. This trail leaves the Smith Lake Trail and climbs steadily for 3 miles to Mt. Elwell (7,818 feet). It descends 0.7 miles to the Long Lake Trail junction and continues another 1.1 miles to the PCT and a 4 WD trail. This trail is strenuous and receives light use.

Directions from Graeagle: Travel south on Hwy. #89 for approximately 1.25 miles and turn right onto Primary Forest Route #24. Follow this road for approximately 3 miles and turn right onto the road to Gray Eagle Lodge. The trailhead is on the road to Gray Eagle Lodge. Follow the Smith Lake Trail for 2.5 miles and it will connect with the Mt. Elwell Trail.

Long Lake Trail - The Long Lake Trail is 2.7 miles and at an elevation of 5,800 feet. This trail climbs gradually for 2.7 miles past the Lily Lake Trail and the Grassy Lake Trail and then onto Mt. Elwell Trail.

Mud Lake Trail - The Mud Lake Trail is an easy 1.2 mile hike at an elevation of 6,500 feet. This trail connects the Silver Lake Trail with the Mt. Elwell Trail.

Smith Lake Trail - Smith Lake Trail is an easy 2.5 mile hike at an elevation of 5,800 feet. This is a maintained trail that climbs past the Mt. Elwell Trail junction to Smith Lake. The trail extends to the Jamison Creek Trail.
