Report: I have been camping at French Meadows since I was six years old; now in my thrities, I still have never tired of the place. It's distance from civilization ensures that it is never crowded (we never make reservations), although Forest Service picnic grounds and boatramps have suffered neglect as a result of the low-attendance. Fishing for Rainbow Trout (stocked) and brook trout in nearby streams is excellent early in the summer, but the lake often drops to low levels by August (better for swimmin than fishin). There are excellent group camps, and two standard car camps - all right on the lake. Don't miss a bumpy drive up to volcanic Chipmunk Ridge, along the south side of the lake, for excellent views of the lake and Granite Chief wilderness. If you like easy four-wheeling, take FR96 north all the way to Donner Lake for lunch in Truckee.
Conditions: Never experienced more than 5-10 minutes of light rain during summer months (June-Aug) in over 25 years. Plenty of shade at area camps/picnic grounds. Mosquitos moderade, depending upon spring rains. Keep all food locked up and away from black bears, who frequent the camp grounds.
Water Availability: Water at all campgrounds; some picnic grounds no longer have functioning facilities.
