Lower Lola Montez Lake Trail is an easy 3 mile trail at an elevation of 6,640 feet. Much of this trail is on private property so hikers are requested to stay on the trail an observe the property rights of the landowner. From the trailhead follow the trail north for 0.25 miles to a road. The road will take you to the Lower Castle Creek crossing (Lower Castle Creek causes some wet feet in early season.) The trail veers to the right 0.25 miles after the creek crossing, and then climbs for another 0.25 miles, where it ties in with the road again. For the next mile, under a canopy of beautiful forest, the road gently ascends. At the end of the road, which is also the beginning of the "Motor Vehicle Restricted Area, " the trail leads to an open flat meadow. From there it is a 0.25 mile hike to Lower Lola Montez Lake. There are campsites around the lake and fishing is relatively good.
Directions from Truckee: Travel west on Hwy. #80 and take the Soda Springs exit. On the north side of the freeway follow the paved road east past the fire station for 0.3 miles to the parking area.
