General Description

Castle Rock Road is a most difficult 9 mile hike at an elevation of 1,000 feet. This ride is geared for bicyclists who want an aerobic climb and an outstanding view as a reward for reaching the top. To reach the summit the rider must be prepared for a significant climb.

The trail is a short steep climb and is is recommended to hike this section. Castle Rock was probably named because of its large, tall, cone shaped that resembles a fortress or castle that overlooks much of the upper McKenzie Valley.

The view from the summit is spectacular. The Three Sisters Wilderness in the east, the verdant upper McKenzie River Valley below, and the coastal range in the western sky enhances the breathtaking experience.

Directions from Blue River: Travel 4.5 miles east on Hwy. #126 to the turnoff for Cougar Reservoir (Rd. 19.) Proceed south along Rd. 19 for approximately 0.5 miles. Where Rd. 19 forks take the left fork and take Rd. 410. In another 0.5 miles take a left on Kings Road (Rd. 2639) and continue for one mile until you reach Rd. 480 (O'Leary Rd.) O'Leary Rd. will take you the 5.8 miles to Castle Rock Trailhead.
