Houston Recreation Area is located on a fork of the 41,000 acre Lewis Smith Lake, east of Double Springs. This is a large and popular recreation area where camping, picnicking, boating, fishing, water skiing, swimming and hiking are available in the area. Boating is possible year-round. Lewis Smith Lake is a large reservoir which is part of the headwaters of the Black Warrior River basin. The deeply dissected dendritic drainage pattern accommodates many miles of shoreline. The boat ramp has two lanes. Fishing is available for bass and bream year-round, stripped bass in winter and spring, and crappie in the spring. Natural and artificial baits may be used. Fishermen utilize vessels from upscale bass boats to basic john boats. Shoreline fishing is also popular.
Directions from Double Springs: Travel east on Hwy. 278, then turn right (south) onto County Rd 63. At Houston veer right and stay on County Rd 63. Turn right (west) onto Forest Rd 118. You will see signs for the recreation area.
