Ocala National Forest
|
Big Scrub Recreation Area is located in southwestern Ocala National Forest near the junction of Forest Routes 573 and 588. The area offers primitive campsites, toilets, drinking water and a picnic area. It is just west of the 40-mile white-blazed Prairie Horse Trail, making it convenient for equestrians. Horse trailer parking is located on FR 573 approximately four miles west of Big Scrub. In addition, riders may easily access the trail from this facility where Prairie Trail crosses the forest road. Vehicles and trailers can be parked along the shoulder of the road. The Ocala National Forest offers many challenging and enjoyable locations to ride an OHV. A detailed map that shows some of these locations can be obtained at a ranger office or visitor center. The area around Big Scrub Campground is one where visitors can enjoy riding on deep sandy roads and through the sand pine scrub. There are many unnumbered roads and trails that zigzag throughout the forest.
Directions from Altoona, FL: Travel west along State Highway 42 about 10 miles. Turn right (north) onto Forest Route 588. Follow it about 5 - 8 miles.
