Ocala National Forest

Big Scrub Recreation Area is located in southwestern Ocala National Forest near the junction of Forest Routes 573 and 588. The area offers primitive campsites, toilets, drinking water and a picnic area. It is just west of the 40-mile white-blazed Prairie Horse Trail, making it convenient for equestrians. Horse trailer parking is located on FR 573 approximately four miles west of Big Scrub. In addition, riders may easily access the trail from this facility where Prairie Trail crosses the forest road. Vehicles and trailers can be parked along the shoulder of the road.

The Ocala National Forest offers many challenging and enjoyable locations to ride an OHV. A detailed map that shows some of these locations can be obtained at a ranger office or visitor center. The area around Big Scrub Campground is one where visitors can enjoy riding on deep sandy roads and through the sand pine scrub. There are many unnumbered roads and trails that zigzag throughout the forest.

Directions from Altoona, FL: Travel west along State Highway 42 about 10 miles. Turn right (north) onto Forest Route 588. Follow it about 5 - 8 miles.

Report: We got lost, very lost. You need a GPS for sure if you are going to do alot of riding. There are lots of trails out there. We were lost for about 3 hours, and it all looked the same. Almost had the helicopter looking for us. Some guy in a 4x4 saved us.

Report: I have lived in Ocala all of my life. I own a house on Lake Kerr and have never been to this area of the forest, My son and I set up at the camp ground and rode for over two hours, hard and fast. We never saw the same terrain. I am buying a GPS tracking device and heading back out for more fun. Also need to carry water with you to keep your fluid levels up.

Report: I road the big scrub area this past weekend 07/20/03 very hot temperatures, however, not to bad as long as you stay hydrated and on the move. Plenty of wild life. Observed a very large black bear and a cyote pup while riding the sand trails just west of the Big Scrub campsite area. Due to ATV trails criss-crossing everywhere it is quite easy to get confused on where you've been and getting lost is easy to do. GPS system recommended but a compass will do as long as you have a forest road map. If your riding in the area just west of the Big Scrub camp ground and get lost you will eventually exit from the trails onto one of the numbered roads. As long as you know what numbered roads run north south east and west in the area you are riding, you can use a compass to determine what numbered road you are on and where you are in conjunction with the Big Scrub camping area. I have a GPS system and still made a few wrong turns but made it back to the camp area with no problems. Alot of fun! I also recommend a Camel Back for keeping hydrated. Happy ATV'ing
