The Tanis Mesa South Cabin is located in a duplex with the Tanis Mesa North Cabin, southeast of Yakutat. The surrounding terrain is mostly flat, with blueberry and willow shrubs. Wildlife in the Brabazon Mountain Range include moose, brown bear, and mountain goats. Tanis Lake is a 2 mile hike north from the cabin; Fassett Glacier can be seen calving into the lake. Cabin is equipped with wooden bunks, table, benches, oilstove for heat, and an outside toilet. It does not have mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags and pads, cookstove, cooking gear, and food. Bring #1 oil for the oil stove that heats the cabin. A meatshed is available at the cabin.Reservations can be made the day of arrival, or up to 180 days in advance. Boil or treat water before drinking. Keep open fires in the rings only. Gather only dead and down wood. Occasionally poor weather can result in extended stays, and cabin users should be prepared for this. There are NO discounts for Golden Age and Golden Access Passports for Alaska cabin rentals. The person holding the reservation must be 18 and must be a member of the party using the cabin. Use of this cabin by a commercial operator, such as an outfitter or guide, is NOT allowed. Reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation May 1 - September 30 and a maximum stay of 10 consecutive nights per party October 1 - April 30. All garbage and food must be packed out.
Directions: Located 50 miles southeast of Yakutat. Cabin is between Tanis Mesa and Brabazon Mountain Range. Access by wheeled plane only, 1800' airstrip at cabin.
