The Chappie-Shasta OHV Area is located ten miles northeast of Redding and offers an OHV staging area with loading ramp. All vehicles must be green stickered / red stickered or registered with the DMV. There are 250 miles or road / trail, restrooms, water, pay phone, day use parking, full-time site attendant, and hosts that live on site 365 days per year. There is also a campground with 22 units. Fires are permitted in fire rings only. (NOTE: As of June 2002, campground is closed.) A USFS campground is adjacent to the staging area.

In addition to off-highway vehicle use, the Chappie-Shasta area is conducive for bird watching, mountain biking, fishing, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, hunting, and picnicking. Amenities including picnic tables, toilets and water are ADA compliant. Trash collection provided.

Vegetation ranges from Sacramento River riparian, manzanita chaparral, and knobcone pine at the lower elevations to oak woodland, Ponderosa Pine and Douglas fir at the higher elevations and on north slopes. The nearest services are in Shasta Lake City or Redding.

Directions from Redding, CA: Take Interstate 5 for 10 miles northeast to the Shasta Dam exit. Travel west on Shasta Dam Boulevard to Shasta Dam. Continue west across dam, staying on paved road to the staging area. Note: A permit is now required to cross Shasta Dam to the Chappie-Shasta OHV Area.

Report: There was a big Storm that went threw This Week So the Streems were full, but easy to cross with 4x4. Secluded and great views. Brung detailed map Due to many trail options. Most trails are labeled with difficulty and direction. Great time and plenty of space!
Conditions: Muddy but firm in most places. There are steeps and many rocky areas if you are looking for them. Heavily wooded areas Off the trails
Water Availability: Bring your own.
