Report: The Knoxville-Berryessa road is now paved all the way, but is a single lane after the first water crossing north of Lake Berryessa until you reach the Knoxville mine. The road is uneven and bumpy at various locations. Knoxville public lands can be either wet and muddy (fall/winter/spring) or hot, dry and dusty (summer). Be prepared for the correct driving conditions. Some of the more popular places and easy to get to spots have been trashed and are littered with garbage and spent shells. But there are some nice intermediate level trails off the main dirt road that traverses the BLM area North-South, be prepared for close in brush and big rocks (not boulders). The rocks are volcanic in nature and are very sharp. Make sure your spare is in good shape! Good tires should make the journey without mishap. The campground at Lower Hunting Creek has been upgraded this last year (2002), and the creek crossing just north of the campground now has culvert style bridge. I kind of miss the water crossing there, but it is better for the fish. Take your time, look around and explore! This place has lots to offer and is close to the SF Bay area. Please(!!) Leave No Trace! This place has been abused for years now and the impact can be readily seen. There's lots to offer here, but abuse could cause offroad adversaries to try to shut it down.
