General Description

The Covington Flats area lies in the northwestern portion of the park. Approximately one mile before reaching the picnic area on Covington Flats Road is a side road that leads westward. This side road ends near the summit of Eureka Peak approximately two miles from Covington Road. By turning southward on this side road one and a quarter miles west of Covington Road users will reach the Upper Covington Flat backcountry registry. From the registry users will find some great hiking and exploring opportunities. The Covington Flats area contains some of the largest Joshua Trees, junipers, pinyon pines and the lushest vegetation in the high desert.

Directions from Oasis Visitor Center: Follow Twentynine Palms Highway westward to La Contenta, which is a few miles west of Joshua Tree. Turn left on La Contenta and follow it southward. Drive across Alta Loma Drive; at this point the road name changes to Covington Road. Follow this southeastward several miles to a side road leading westward to Eureka Peak.

Seasonal Information:
Normally Open: Year-round (NOTE: The road may be closed during the Winter months due to wet conditions.) .
