General Description

Old Pinnacles Trail leads from the northern end of the Balconies Trail to the Bear Gulch Trail. The Balconies Trail can be accessed from the Chaparral Ranger Station in the western portion of the monument. It leads eastward 1.4 miles (through Balconies Caves) to join the Old Pinnacles Trail. From this point Old Pinnacles Trail follows the West Fork Chalone Creek drainage. Approximately 1.3 miles from the beginning of Old Pinnacles Trail it is joined by North Wilderness Trail. At this junction the West Fork of Chalone Creek and the North Fork of Chalone Creek join to form Chalone Creek. Old Pinnacles Trail continues along the drainage one mile from this confluence. The trail ends at the intersection of the High Peaks Trail, which comes from the west, and the Bear Gulch Trail, which comes from the south. The length of this trail is 2.3 miles one-way. It is rated as easy by park staff.

Directions from Soledad: Follow Highway 146 12 miles to the Chaparral Ranger Station. From the ranger station walk northeastward on the Balconies Trail. At the fork in the trail, .6 miles from the trailhead, take either side. The Balconies Trail loop ends at the Old Pinnacles Trail.

Balconies Caves - The Balconies Caves lie less than one mile from the Chaparral Ranger Station in the western portion of the monument. Visitors are encouraged to explore the caves.

Balconies Trail - Balconies Trail leads in a 2.4 mile loop through many different volcanic formations, including two caves.

High Peaks Trail - This strenuously steep trail leads 5.3 miles through the central terrain of Pinnacles National Monument.
