General Description

The Green Mountain Reservoir Recreation Area surrounds Green Mountain Reservoir, 15 miles north of Silverthorne. The reservoir is located on the Blue River at an elevation of 8,000 feet. Water surface for fishing is approximately 2,125 acres.

Directions from Silverthorne: Follow Highway 9 north of Silverthorne 14 miles. Turn left onto FDR 30 to go around the west side of Green Mountain Reservoir or continue on Highway 9 to travel around the east side of the reservoir.

Directions from Beaver Creek: Travel 38 miles east on I-70 to Silverthorne. Go 14 miles north on Hwy. 9. Turn left onto FDR 30 to go around the west side of Green Mountain Reservoir or continue on Highway 9 to travel around the east side of the reservoir.

Directions from Vail: Travel 29 miles east on I-70 to Silverthorne. Go 14 miles north on Hwy. 9. Turn left onto FDR 30 to go around the west side of Green Mountain Reservoir or continue on Highway 9 to travel around the east side of the reservoir.

The daily fee is $5.00 for 2005, with a $25.00 season pass available, as reasonable as any in the country. The spring is an ideal time to visit. Last weekend, I found blooming nipple cacti, yellow buttercup, moss campion, mountain phlox, and Wyoming paintbrush. With close access to wilderness trails and a remote high desert "Leave-No-Trace" attitude, I recommend the following U.S. Forest Service managed campgrounds: Elliott, Willows, Cow Creek North, Cow Creek South, and Cataract. It was sad to see how low the water was. It looked more like a creek. Hope to get some rain or snow to Fill it back up.
