General Description

This section of the Colorado receives relatively light pressure, especially considering the fine fly fishing opportunities available. Floating is the best way to cover this water which may, in part, account for the relatively low numbers of fly fishers.
This section, below the Shoshone power station at Grizzly Creek through Glenwood Springs to the Roaring Fork, is a fairly large river. From here downstream, however, the Colorado becomes quite a large river, at least by Colorado standards. Good fishing and about six good float trips are available from here all the way to Rifle. There is also adequate access from along Interstate 70 and further downstream along Highway 6.
In this section of the river there are mainly Rainbow and Brown trout, with Colorado River , whitefish, and some brookies and cutthroats. Relatively light fishing pressure and generally good results make this an excellent area to fish.

Seasonal Information:
Normally Accessible: January through December (NOTE: Fish year-round, but the best time is August to October.) .

Recreation Opportunities
Activity Remarks On Site
ICON Cold Water Fishing From Grizzly Creek to Rifle the Colorado offers many fine fishing opportunities for very large fish. This section receives relatively light pressure due to the fact that it is most popular to float it, but wade fishing is still very effective. The summer and fall in this section of river can have red hot fishing.
ICON Rafting & Kayaking This is the perfect section of river for the intermediate to beginner rafter or kayaker. The Grizzly Creek, No Name, and Shoshone take-outs are the most popular. This section of the river has many different faces from the high walls of Glenwood Canyon to the open space below Glenwood Springs.
