Riding through the trees in the Aspen area

Buttermilk Mountain, one of four mountains in the Aspen/Snowmass resort complex, is located just three miles outside the town of Aspen and is considered one of the premiere learning mountains in the country. Buttermilk Mountain was created in 1958, to add some variety, because Aspen Mountain was considered too difficult for beginners. Buttermilk's ridge rises 2,030 vertical feet above the base area, forming a natural promontory offering ridgetop trails, two summits and magnificent views of surrounding mountains. Most of Buttermilk's 435 acres are groomed each night and 74 percent of Buttermilk's ski and snowboard terrain is rated beginner or intermediate. Not only is Buttermilk a great place to learn to ski or snowboard, but it also offers a great snowboard park and excellent carving terrain. Buttermilk is also, through 2007, the home of the Winter X Games. Buttermilk is accessible by free shuttle from downtown Aspen.
