Barrier Island Visitor Center at Assateague Island National Seashore
Barrier Island Visitor Center is located in the Maryland District of Assateague Island on the southern side of Route 611, before the Verrazzano Bridge entrance into the park. The center is open year round from 9 AM - 5 PM, closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Days. It offers a variety of environmental educations programs to individuals and groups. School groups should call in advance. In addition to the nature study programs, the center offers beachcombing exhibits, brochures, films, a marine aquarium and a touch tank, a favorite with youngsters. The center also features a bookstore that sells park guidebooks, souvenirs, and such. At the visitor center, folks will find a restroom, lost and found, and emergency care.
Directions from Berlin, MD: Travel east along Route 376 about 4 miles turning right onto Route 611. Follow it several miles south carrying it directly to the parkland. Barrier Island is on the right before crossing Sinepuxent Bay. Signage is excellent.
