General Description

Umstead State Park is one of the few state parks offering trails for horses and mountain bikes. This is a multi-use trail which provides access to the most secluded and scenic areas of the park. The trail travels through hard wood forests, open fields and areas filled with rhododendron and mountain laurel. Ferns and wildflowers grace the forest floor during the warmer months. The trail is blazed with red circles.

Directions from Raleigh, NC: Crabtree Creek Section: Off US 70 about six miles northwest of Raleigh's I-440. There is interstate signage. Continue straight after entering the park. Immediately after passing the visitor center, turn left. The road will T shortly. Make a right and continue a short distance taking the first left and traveling past the youth camping and Maple Hill Lodge. Take your next left for horse trailer parking and access to the horse trail.
