General Description

The Bear Valley Visitor Center is located a short distance beyond the main entrance to Point Reyes National Seashore. Around the visitor center you'll find parking, telephones, a picnic area, restrooms and trailheads. The visitor center resembles a large wooden barn and houses a variety of resources about the seashore. Park guests can expect an orientation to Point Reyes history, geology and ecology, through visitor center exhibits. A bookstore and rangers provide additional needed information on activities within the seashore. Reservations and permits for backcountry camping can be obtained here. Hours for the Bear Valley Visitor Center are as follows: Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 p.m.; Weekends and holidays, 8:00 am to 5:00 p.m.; Closed December 25.

Directions from Highway 1: At Olema turn into the park entrance on Bear Valley Road. The Bear Valley Visitor Center is approximately a one minute drive from the park entrance. Turn left into the visitor center parking area.

Earthquake Trail - This is a short, paved trail that explores the San Andreas Fault Zone from the Bear Valley Picnic Area.

Kule Loklo Trail - This short trail leads to a reconstructed Coast Miwok Indian village. Interpretive panels describe the history and culture of the site.

Mt. Wittenburg Trail - This trail begins from the Bear Valley Trail and leads to the highest point in the park. It can be used in combination with other trails to create a loop to the visitor center.
