General Description

The Fountain Valley Trail leaves the visitors center and follows a 2.2 mile loop through the northern part of the park. Taking the right side of the fork you'll pass the Lyons Formation on the left with the gentle slopes of the Hogback to the right of the trail. The elevation decreases slightly as the trail leads north to the Lyons Overlook. (This is a good side excursion for a view of the Fountain Formation.) The northernmost point of the loop is the Persse Place, a small stone house built by the first owner of the property. The western side of the loop leads between the Fountain (right) and Lyons Formations. This is a beautiful stroll or ski in any weather. A interpretive trail guide available in the visitors center points out various natural details along the path.

Directions from Castle Rock: Travel northwest on Highway 85 toward Sedalia. Continue approximately 6 miles past Sedalia to Titan Road. (Before the left turn on to Titan Road is a sign for Roxborough State Park.) Follow Titan Road as it turns into Rampart Range Road and leads you to Roxborough Road and the park entrance.
