For a unique backcountry experience, Sawmill Canyon Campsite offers excellent scenery and solitude for handicapped visitors. Less then 1 mile north on Medano Pass Road, the two car parking area can accommodate up to four wheelchairs. The hardened trail to the campsite is .1 miles long and has a maximum grade of 6%.

Sawmill Canyon Accessible Campsite - 10.98
Facilities include an elevated tent pad, picnic table, fire grate, firewood and food storage containers and an open air toilet. The site may be checked out for free in person at the Visitor's Center, or by calling 719-378-2312, ext. 220.
The Monument has eight backpacking backcountry sites, with hiking distances ranging from .6 miles to 10.5 miles. Backpackers may also spend the night on the main dune mass. A free backcountry permit must be obtained from the Visitor Center if are camping in the Monument or if leaving a vehicle in the Monument overnight. Backpackers can also camp in the Rio Grande National Forest (Medano Pass, Mosca Pass or Blanca Peak Trail).
Directions from Visitor Center: Drive north from the Visitor Center and the highway turns into Medano Pass Primitive Road. Drive about 1 mile to the campsite.
