Quick Facts

Captain Staunton's Interpretive Trail

Difficulty: Easy
Elevation: 430 Feet (134.0 Meters)
Elevation Gain: Minimal
Length, Round Trip: 1.0 Mile (1.6 Kilometers)

General Description

The trail was named for Captain Henry Staunton who, before the Revolutionary War, commanded a company of soldiers to protect early settlers from Indian attacks. It is a pleasant trail that actually has two legs. At the top of the trail the hiker turns right for a few feet on River Bank Trail then turns right again to head back onto the second leg of Captain Staunton's. It is an easy 1-mile round-trip walk traveling through a hardwood forest of ash and oak. Bug repellent is a welcome accompaniment during the warmer months.

Directions from South Boston, VA: The park is 18 miles east of South Boston. Take U.S. 360 West to Rt. 344 to the park entrance. Trail begins between the first campground and the old park office which is on the left side of the road not too far past the entrance.
