General Description

Four Wheel Drive Road leads ten miles from Tower Arch Road to Willow Flats Road. A four-wheel drive vehicle with high clearance is necessary to travel this rocky, sandy and sometimes steep road. Park authorities recommend visitors drive this road from its northern terminus to Willow Flats Road. Travel is not recommended during winter or periods of high precipitation. Check road conditions with a ranger before traveling on this route.

Directions from Main Park Entrance: Drive 16.7 miles northward along the Main Park Road to the Salt Valley Road. Turn left and drive northwestward on Salt Valley Road 7.7 miles to Tower Arch Road. Turn left and drive 1.7 miles to the northern terminus of Four Wheel Drive Road.

Seasonal Information:
Normally Open: Mid-March through Mid-November (NOTE: This route is not maintained extremely slippery conditions may exist after heavy rains or snow.) .

Report: Toughest part is about 1 mile in starting from north to south. There were some obstacles later in the trip as well that proved challenging.
Conditions: it had been raining lightly pretty much all day. The rocks weren't slippery and it probably helped stiffen the loose sand, which can get very deep. Some pretty steep parts. Definitely need high clearance and low gear ratio.
Water Availability: No sources of water on trail. Fortunately, we didn't need any.

Main Park Road - The Main Park Road leads 18 miles from the park entrance to Devils Garden.

Salt Valley Road Improved Road - The Salt Valley Road is a gravel and dirt serviced road passable by two-wheel drive vehicles in good conditions. It leads northwestward from the main park road.

Tower Arch Four-Wheel Drive Road - The Tower Arch Road leads three miles from Salt Valley Road to the western terminus of Tower Arch Trail.

Willow Flats Road Four-Wheel Drive Road - This four-wheel drive road leads four miles from Balanced Rock parking area to the park boundary. It continues four more miles west of the park boundary to Highway 191.
