General Description

The Scenic Drive begins at the park Visitor Center and leads southward ten miles to Pleasant Creek Road. It is an easy, paved road that follows the western side of Capitol Reef. The route provides access to Grand Wash, Capitol Gorge, Pleasant Creek and the South Draw Roads as well as Old Wagon, Cohab Canyon and Fremont River Trails.

The Scenic Drive is not a loop, so you must return via the same road unless making a long four-wheel drive trek using South Draw Road. An entrance fee is charged for each vehicle using Scenic Drive, with the entrance station located just south of Fruita campground. Fees are not charged for holders of Golden Eagle, Golden Age, or Golden Access passes. A free Guide to the Scenic Drive brochure is available at the entrance station.

Directions from Highway 24: Turn southward at the visitor center on to Scenic Drive.

Capitol Gorge Trail - This trail leads four miles from the end of Capitol Gorge Road to Notom-Bullfrog Road. The route is rarely used and not maintained beyond The Tanks.

Cohab Canyon Trail - This trail leads from Fruita Campground through a hidden canyon atop Capitol Reef to the Fremont River.

Fremont River Trail - This trail leads through the Fremont River Valley and some of its orchards to a high perspective with panoramic views of surrounding terrain.

Grand Wash Trail - This trail leads two and a quarter miles through Capitol Reef. It is characterized by steep canyon walls and a narrow channel.

Old Wagon Trail - This trail follows an abandoned wagon road to a overlook of the Waterpocket Fold. It leads in a three and a half mile loop.
