General Description

This trail follows a route through a hidden canyon that connects Scenic Drive to Highway 24. Hikers can begin at the Hickman Bridge or Fruita Campground. A shuttle makes this a quick trek through some beautiful and rugged terrain. This description details the trail from the campground.

The first quarter mile of this trail follows a stunning series of switchbacks. (A good place to view this feat in trail construction is from the Fremont Gorge Overlook Trail.) The track ascends at least 400 feet in this first stretch. Upon ascending the ridge views westward into the orchard-filled valley and canyons beyond abound. The trail enters the canyon atop Capitol Reef. One mile from the trailhead the Cohab Canyon Trail intersects the Frying Pan Trail. Take the middle trail to continue through Cohab Canyon descending to the Fremont River.

Directions from Capitol Reef Visitor Center: Hickman Bridge Access: Drive eastward on Highway 24 approximately 1.5 miles to the Hickman Bridge Trailhead. Park at this trailhead and cross the highway to the Cohab Canyon Trail's northern terminus.

Directions from Capitol Reef National Park: Fruita Campground Access: Drive southward on Scenic Drive to the trailhead immediately north of the campground.

Seasonal Information:
Normally Open: Year-round (NOTE: Trail along steep cliffs can become hazardous during periods of snowfall. Check at visitor center for current conditions.) .
