Scenic Entrance Road
|
From the park's main road, travel to the first picnic area. Here canoeists will find a small launch providing access to the tannin-stained waters that stretch between the Gulf and Lake Osprey. The serpentine creek bisects the park following a similar route as the park road. The creek is edged with sabal palms, pine and oaks. Mangroves draped with Spanish moss cling to the shallows. Lurking alligators and statuesque waders endue the tropical atmosphere. Keep an eye out for river otter that enjoy the estuarine waters as much as the young snook and tarpon. Anglers fish both the creek and the freshwater of Lake Osprey. The park does rent canoes.
Directions from Sarasota, FL: Travel 6 miles south along U.S. Highway 41 / Tamiami Trail. The park is located on the eastern side of the highway. A canoe launch is located in the first picnic area.
