Description - Redstone is a gem of the Crystal River Valley. The ultimate Rocky Mountain Resort town, it has one street that parallels Highway 133 filled with galleries and shops. The historic Redstone Inn lies at the end of the street, and Redstone Castle sits just South of Town.
Attractions
- Redstone is a small village, population 92, nestled in the Crystal River Valley. The town was built by the founder of Colorado Fuel and Iron Company, John Osgood, in 1902. His intentions were to build a "model town" for the workers in his coal mines. The cottages that line the one street of Redstone were built for married miners and their families. The Redstone Inn was built for single miners and guests. The remnants of the coke ovens from the era line Highway 133 opposite the townsite. If you want to relax in a beautifully picturesque setting Redstone is the place. When you are finished relaxing you have unending outdoor recreation possibilities at your doorstep. The West Elk Scenic Loop begins from Highway 133 and leads south. The Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness and Raggeds Wilderness areas lie east and south of Redstone respectively. The ghost town of Crystal City and the picturesque Crystal Mill are a short drive from Redstone.
Recreation - The recreation opportunities that surround Redstone are countless. Four-wheel driving, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, backpacking, horseback riding and camping opportunities lie within 15 minutes of this Rocky Mountain jewel. Climate - The elevation of Redstone is close to 7,500 feet. At this elevation heavy snows can be expected during long winters. The weather can change dramatically and quickly. A warm summer day can change to a drenching electrical storm. The higher the elevation the faster storms move, so if your playing in the high country around Redstone be sure to bring rain gear, hats and gloves. Hypothermia can kill in any season, so be prepared. Location -
Redstone is located in the Sopris Ranger District of the White River National Forest. It is 16.2 southwest of Carbondale on Highway 133. It lies along the Crystal River and immediately west of the Maroon-Snowmass Wilderness boundary.
