Description
- Thurmond Lake, the largest U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project east of the Mississippi River, was built between 1946 and 1954 as part of a comprehensive plan of development for the Savannah River Basin. Thurmond Lake is one of the 10 most visited Corps lakes in the nation, serving about seven million visitors annually. Many recreation facilities around the lake are actually state parks.
Recreation - Among the many activities enjoyed on and around the lake are, fishing, boating, camping, and picnicking. Climate - South Carolina generally has a temperate climate, with cool winters and warm, humid summers. Snow and freezing temperatures are possible in the winter at the higher elevations. Thunderstorms are possible throughout the year but most common in the spring and summer. Tropical storms occasionally strike the coast during the hurricane season. Location -
The J Strom Thurmond Lake boarders the South Carolina and Georgia state line. It is north of Augusta, GA and south west of Columbia, SC.
