Description
- The Parks Ranger District takes in portions of the Park Range, Medicine Bow Mountains, Never Summer Mountains, and Rabbit Ears Range. It covers a relatively unpopulated and undeveloped area of Colorado. The district includes portions of the Mount Zirkel and Never Summer Wildernesses.
Recreation - In the summer months, the district provides opportunities for camping, backpacking, hiking, fishing and sightseeing. Hunting is the most popular activity in the autumn months. The winter brings plenty of snow, and with it many opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Climate - Summer weather brings frequent afternoon thunderstorms, that are common from mid-June through September. Electrical storm activity is a special consideration in the higher elevations. Daytime high temperatures average around 70 degrees, with lows occasionally below freezing. Autumn weather brings stability to the atmosphere with clear, cool days common from early September to late October. Expect freezing temperatures at night, even snow is possible. During the winter months be prepared for storm systems from the northwest, that start in early November. These usually deposit large amounts of snow in the mountains surrounding North and Middle Park. Winter weather can continue in the highest elevations until early June. Low temperatures are often below zero with snowfall averaging over 400 inches/year in the Park Range. Location -
The Parks Ranger District is located in north-central Colorado, on the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. It encompasses much of the National Forest lands around North and Middle Parks. The district surrounds the towns of Walden and Kremmling, with offices in both of these towns.
