Description
- This Buffalo Ranger District is comprised mostly of the Teton Wilderness. Bordering the northeast side of Grand Teton National Park, the southeast side of Yellowstone National Park and the west side of the large Washakie Wilderness, it is part of a vast wild area in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The Continental Divide runs through the middle of the District. The headwaters of the Yellowstone River are found here. The Buffalo Fork is another large stream drainage on the District.
Recreation - There are several small campgrounds and some backcountry roads near the south and east ends of the District but much of the recreation on the Buffalo Ranger District is wilderness based. Because of the vastness of the Teton Wilderness, travel by horseback and horsepacking are common. Backpacking, big game hunting and fishing are other popular summer activities. With its abundant snowfall, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular activities here in the winter months. Climate - As throughout the Rocky Mountains, the climate varies drastically depending on elevation. Summers generally offer warm clear days with cool nights. Afternoon thunderstorms are often a possibility in the summer. In the winter, heavy snow but frequent sunny days, make the area ideal for winter activities. Harsh weather - including wind, cold, and snow - is possible throughout the winter and even throughout the year, in the highest elevations. Location -
The Buffalo Ranger District is located in northwest Wyoming, at the north end of the Bridger-Teton National Forest, north of Jackson. The District sits south of Yellowstone National Park and east of Grand Teton National Park. The District Office is in Moran, along Highway 287, which leads through the south end of the District.
