Description - The Salt Lake Ranger District covers a very popular portion of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest in the Wasatch Range, to the east of Salt Lake City. The district provides recreation opportunities for more than a million people in less than a 30 minute drive and draws visitors from around the world to its famous ski resorts.
Attractions
- The Salt Lake Ranger District has a total of 13 campgrounds and 15 picnic areas. Campgrounds are located in mountain environments with beautiful scenery. None of the campgrounds have showers or RV hookups. Numerous trails are available for all abilities and all skill levels. Many of the trails enter wilderness areas and/or watershed areas. The Salt Lake District encompasses four wilderness areas: Mount Olympus, Twin Peaks, Lone Peak, and Deseret Peak Wildernesses. The Wasatch-Cache National Forest has become one of America's favorite winter play areas including world famous ski resorts, miles of cross country ski trails, and vast snowmobiling opportunities. Among the resorts in the Salt Lake Ranger District are Solitude,Solitude Nordic Center, and Brighton up Big Cottonwood Canyon and Snowbird and Alta, up Little Cottonwood Canyon. Park City, Deer Valley and The Canyons lie just east of the Salt Lake District.
Recreation - The Salt Lake Ranger District offers some outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities. Some of the most popular activities include: hiking, backpacking, camping, mountain biking, fishing, skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and sightseeing. Climate - Because of Utah's mid-continent location, it experiences wide temperature variations between seasons. Climates in Utah also vary greatly with elevation. During winter and spring, most of the precipitation comes in the form of snow, with a deep snowpack accumulating in many of the high elevations. Some areas in the Wasatch receive over 500 inches of snow annually. By late spring, temperatures warm up in the lower elevations, while the mountain snowpack begins to melt. The high mountain roads and trails are not normally free of snow until mid to late June. Summer brings warm temperatures to most areas with hot temperatures in the desert areas. The Salt Lake Ranger District of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest encompasses a large portion of the Wasatch Range, to the east of Salt Lake City, between Salt Lake City and Park City. It covers the area from Farmington Canyon in Davis County to Lone Peak east of Draper. It also includes the Stansbury Mountain Range near Tooele Utah.
