General Information

Description - The Feather River Ranger District provides many opportunities for recreation. The Feather River National Scenic Byway leads through the District. The Feather River itself is a National Wild and Scenic River. The Little Grass Valley Reservoir provides ample activities. Sly Creek Reservoir also has many opportunities for recreation. Feather Falls is a good place for viewing a set of falls.

Recreation - The Feather River Ranger District in the Plumas National Forest offers recreationists a wide variety of outdoor experiences including: camping, picnicking, fishing, waterskiing, swimming, boating, hunting, hiking, sightseeing, and winter sports such as snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

Climate - The Plumas generally experiences warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters. Weather can change rapidly during all seasons of the year. Elevation plays a major role in temperature and precipitation. This precipitation falls mainly from October through April. At higher elevations, it comes mostly in the form of snow. Clouds can build up during the summer to produce thunderstorm activity. It is wise to pack for any season with clothing that can be "layered", ready to peel off or add on as the thermometer dictates. Always include some kind of rain gear.

Location - The Feather River Ranger District encompasses the southwestern portion of the Plumas National Forest in Northern California. It lies north of Lake Oroville. The southern end of this District borders the Tahoe National Forest. Oroville, La Porte, Feather Falls and Challenge are some of the towns in this area. The District Office is located in the town of Oroville.

Report: june 17, 2005, riding harley over feather river canyon mountain in the snow, sleet and very wendy. beautiful but too cold to stop and look around. can't wait to go back when it's warmer. thought june would be warm but it surely wasn't!

Plumas National Forest - The Plumas National Forest is located in Northern California between the Sierra Nevada and the Cascade Ranges. The Plumas offers tree covered mountains, high alpine lakes and miles of clear running streams.
